Multi-Modal Trip Planning Assistant

14-week full-time contract position (30 hours per week), from May 29, 2018 through September 3, 2018.

Rate of pay: $16/hour

About the Program: The Bicycle Valet is a program of BEST, providing professional, secure, coat-check style bicycle parking in and around Metro Vancouver since 2006. We’ve just wrapped up our busiest season to date, parking a record-breaking 29,000+ bicycles over the course of 316 event days in 2017. As the The Bicycle Valet Multi-Modal Trip Planning Assistant, you will be aiding the Program Coordinator by researching and presenting multi-modal methods of reaching special events across Metro Vancouver, and by operating The Bicycle Valet at special events.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Educate public on sustainable transportation and environmental impacts

  • Research multi-modal methods of travelling to special events across Metro Vancouver at which The Bicycle Valet will be present, and compile and present this information in a way that is visually appealing and easy to understand

  • Update The Bicycle Valet website with multi-modal methods of travelling to special events

  • Maintain the day-to-day operations of a seasonal Valet service by ensuring that all required supplies and equipment are present, scheduling all required staff, updating the staff manual, and collecting and recording cash donations, contest entries, and service usage on a regular basis

  • Operate The Bicycle Valet at special events across Metro Vancouver by: picking up The Bicycle Valet van at the designated pick-up point, driving to and from the venue, leading set-up and take-down, parking bicycles, and providing exceptional customer service to patrons

  • Act as the supervisor/in-charge staff member at the Valet in the absence of The Bicycle Valet Coordinator

  • Train and supervise casual staff and volunteers on Valet operations, Project 529 registration and information surrounding bike theft education and resources in Vancouver

  • Under direction of The Bicycle Valet Coordinator, communicate and work with The Bicycle Valet partners and event organizers in executing Valet operations

  • Maintain inventory and ensure supplies are kept stocked and updated on a regular basis, shopping for basic operational equipment and supplies when necessary

  • Coordinate and create social media content to promote bicycling, multi-modal transportation, and Valet service

  • Collect data for evaluation purposes, including number of bikes parked each day

  • Assist The Bicycle Valet Coordinator with logistical planning for days with multiple events

  • Ensure safety of staff, volunteers, and bikes during operational hours

  • Ensure professional look and branding of The Bicycle Valet at all times

  • Provide suggestions for improvement of service to The Bicycle Valet Coordinator and project partners

Skills and Experience:

  • Familiar with and interested in sustainable transportation

  • Experience in leadership roles managing personal duties and those of others

  • Strong customer service, problem-solving, multitasking, organizational, and communication skills

  • Conscientiousness and attention to detail

  • Able to work effectively independently and as a part of a team

  • Able to adapt quickly to new information and changes

  • Experience using multiple social media platforms (Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook)

  • Experience with graphic design

  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Drive office suites


  • Valid BC Class 5 or 7 Drivers Licence and comfortable driving large vehicles

  • Able to work weekends and have a flexible schedule

  • Physically capable of working long days and lifting heavy items

  • Must be between the ages of 15 and 30

  • Must have been registered as a full time student in the previous academic year and intend to return to school full time in the fall

  • Must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, or designated Refugee status

  • Priority will be given to members of a visible minority
